The future of children’s books

Hello Parents! We just finished reading two books this past month that talk about the importance of offering praise for your kids to encourage better behavior. The books are Drive: The surprising truth about what motivates us by Daniel Pink and Switch: How to change things when change is hard by the Heath Brothers.

Situation: Your kid comes home from school with his report card for the month. She got one A, for B’s and one F. Where do will you spend your time as a parent?

Problem: The first thing you notice is ‘the bad’ grades and immediately focus on the problem as you want to immediately fix it and come up with all sorts of ideas how to do so, like ‘if then’ punishment.

Solution: Focus on the good grade tell your child he did a great job on that particular subject and ask: How can we be build on that for the other subjects?

Sounds simple right? But ask yourself, is this truly the behavior you adopt in this particular situation?

And it isn’t just for grades, it’s for any situation where you want to encourage another behavior not just from your kid but from yourself. So remember, focus on the things your child does good and encourage that same behavior to other things which you would like him to change.

How to encourage better behavior from your child

A 2 year olds first encounter with an iPad

1. Read to them regularly, with expression and in different voices.
2. Model reading. Let your child see you read often. It can be cookbooks, magazines, the newspaper, novels or non-fiction.
3. Talk about the books or articles you have been reading.
4. Schedule 30 minutes after dinner or every Thursday evening as “Family Reading Time”.
5. Start your own “Family Book Club” if your children are between 10-18 years old.
6. Buy books where their name appears.
7. Find books that come with a CD either in bookstores or the library so your child can listen and follow along.
8. Always give books as at least one part of a birthday, Christmas, Easter, or holiday gift.
9. Give books “just because” for teamwork tasks (aka chores) being well done or because you noticed them demonstrating a positive virtue like compassion.
10. Take your child to the library regularly.
11. Read aloud books that have been made into movies and then watch the movie and do a comparison about which was better – the book or the movie.
