What are the funniest things your kids have said?

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Hi to all! We have a fun discussion going on and about one of the most unpredictable things moms and dads have to go through…Listening to their kids say the cutest things!

Here are a couple of our favorites so far:

Nancy from Twitter Moms:

I remember when my 4 year old daughter named Kelly after we had adopted a male cocker spaniel. I was bathing my daughter in the bath tub when suddenly the dog came running in, my daughter started screaming to the top of her lungs – “No mama, he can not come in!!” “But honey, I answered, he is only a dog!” “But mom, he is a BOY!!, and I am naked!”

Ahhh the cuttest thing ever!

Angela from Twitter Moms:

This is embarrassing! When our son was 3 and we were seated in a restaurant, he was excited to have his milk served with a straw. The other diners were talking quietly and he blurted out “Suck it good!” After my face probably turned purple, I managed to look at my husband sitting across the table with our son next to him. We could both hardly keep from laughing hysterically. A woman seated near us just sat with a big grin on her face. Great question.

Easy ways to help you raise kids who will love reading

little girl reading

Hello Jumpiteerz! As you know we love to read. “There’s a whole world in books”, reading increases your children’s knowledge of the world. Here a few things you can do to help your kids begin to love to read.

  • Read aloud to your child.
Start reading aloud to your child and then have him read aloud to you. For more information on why to read aloud to your child check out .

Take your children to the library once a week.
Get a library card and take your kids to the library. Taking your kids to the library can become an adventure in itself, as they’ll be able to discover new books to read.

  • Discuss children’s books with your children.
Make and effort to talk about the books your child reads at school and the one’s you’ve read to him. Try to relate happening’s from the books to stories of your life.

  • Buy books that you know will interest your child.
Follow your child’s lead and choose books about his favorite activities.

  • Create a comfortable reading space for your child.
Make sure there’s a comfortable space for you and your child to read where there are no distractions. And remember that a place with good lighting and comfortable seating is a must.

  • Visit the Web sites of favorite authors and illustrators.
Some authors have websites with complementary material to their book such as play activities your child can play with.

  • Once a week, cook together using a children’s cookbook.
Reading an following directions is good practice for your children. Cooking presents them with a fun activity that they’ll be doing for the rest of their lives.

  • Buy your children a good dictionary and use it regularly.
Dictionary’s are very useful when your child is starting to read, they help them understand and create a habit of looking up words to know what they mean. Next time they might even start reading the encyclopedia!

  • Make storytelling a part of life.
. Don’t wait until you have a book to read to your child, tell them a story where your child is the central character. Tell personal stories of your childhood whenever you have a chance such as when you’re in the car or dinner table.

  • Use books to bond.
It’s not about just sitting down and reading, it’s about the interaction between child and parent.

  • Repeat.
Toddlers love hearing repetition because that’s the way they learn best, they’re thirsty to learn.

  • Point out words everywhere.
Wherever you go point out words to your child, this will help him learn that words are an important part of everyday life.

  • Demonstrate your own love of reading.
If mom and dad love to read then most likely your child will enjoy reading as much. If there’s books around the house, your child will pick up on this as a signal than reading is important.

  • Talk.
According to researchers at Harvard University, children from families who converse at the dinner table have larger vocabularies. Toddlers are interested about the world around them, encourage them to ask questions, talk to them and don’t be afraid to explore their interests with them.

Do you have any other tips that you use to help you child become a reader that you can share with us?
